You may not have time to be involved in the day to day management of your website. Alternatively you might prefer to manage your website by yourself, but be unsure about how to go about this. I can offer website management on your behalf or train you how to do it yourself.
It is very difficult to learn how to manage a website out of a book, so to speak, because there are so many different types of website structure. You first of all have to understand how your website has been built. For example, is it a "flat html" website or a "database-driven" website? What kind of server is it hosted on, and how do you access that server? Do you build your website offline on your own computer using a programme such as Dreamweaver, and then upload the files to your web server via FTP, or do you manage it online using a Content Management System? Perhaps your site has a hybrid structure. There are many questions such as this which you have to understand before you can even begin to think about managing your website.
Moreover, it is extremely easy to make a mess of your website if you do not fully know what you are doing and, most importantly, what not to do! This is what many of the books and manuals and training courses do not show you. It is very easy, for example, to end up with pages that take several minutes to load for users on a dial-up connection, lose your vital search engine positioning for important search phrases by means of which people are currently finding your site, and have pages that display oddly at various screen sizes and resolutions (for example users being forced to scroll horizontally to read a page at low screen resolutions, or text looking illegibly tiny at higher screen resolutions).
As part of my website management service, I offer to improve your website in ways that will help it get better search engine positioning for relevant search phrases, ensure that it displays properly at various screen resolutions and on different browsers, and ensure that the pages load quickly, plus many other enhancements and improvements, as well as carry out updates on your behalf. The cost of managing your website will largely depend on how frequently you need me to make updates and how complex these updates will be (for example, will I need to incorporate images which I first need to compress and resize, etc.)? I usually offer this service on a per-hourly rate basis. What I normally do is carry out updates on request, log my time, and then invoice you when I have accumulated a few hours of work. Because of my extensive experience in working with websites I can usually carry out updates within a few minutes. This means this may work out much cheaper for you than doing it yourself, even though I charge £25 per hour for this service. Please feel free to contact me to discuss this further for a no-obligation quote.
I first have to assess what kind of website structure you have, and what kind of background knowledge you have in working with computers and with websites. I customise my training to meet your specific requirements. However, I do offer a basic package comprising a set of three training sessions which can be on consecutive days if you wish for which the total cost is £300 (within 35 miles of where I live in Breakish, near Broadford, Skye; if you are further afield I may have to add a little extra to cover travel costs). However, you might prefer shorter training sessions spread out over a long period of time. Broadly speaking, fewer but longer training sessions offer better value for money because I can reduce the amount I have to build in for travelling costs, especially relevant if you are at distance.
